Henning de Beer’s journey into photography began in 1982, inspired by the work of renowned photographer Koos Delport. From the very beginning, he found himself captivated—not only by the art of photography, but by the raw beauty of nature and wildlife that would become the heart of his life’s work.
His first camera, an old AGFA pinhole given to him by his father, marked the start of a lifelong passion. Simple and unforgiving, it had a single shutter speed and no technical luxuries—just the basics. It was here that Henning learned the true fundamentals of photography: patience, observation, and respect for light. He later progressed to a Nikon FG, still fully mechanical, where his only guidance came from a light meter. Working with film in those early years meant every shot mattered—requiring careful decisions around shutter speed, aperture, and film type. These limitations shaped his discipline and sharpened his eye, laying the foundation for the photographer he would become.
Over more than four decades, Henning has established himself as a distinguished wildlife and landscape photographer, as well as a respected photographic guide. His work is deeply rooted in the landscapes and wildlife of Southern Africa, where he has spent countless hours in the field honing both his craft and his understanding of the natural world.
His passion extends beyond capturing beautiful images—it is driven by a profound love for nature and a commitment to the conservation of our natural resources. Through years of observation, Henning has developed an intimate understanding of African wildlife. He firmly believes that to photograph an animal successfully, one must first understand its behaviour, its environment, and its rhythms. This philosophy is evident in his work, which consistently reflects authenticity, respect, and a deep connection to his subjects.
Over the years, his work has received numerous awards and international recognition. His photographs are sold and published worldwide, and several have been selected as finalists in prestigious competitions, including Wildlife Photographer of the Year and Natural History.
